Preventive care
Cancer remains a major health challenge in Nigeria, causing nearly 80,000 deaths annually. Breast cancer is the most common and deadliest type, followed by prostate and cervical cancer. Late diagnosis, low awareness, and limited access to healthcare continue to increase cancer-related deaths, highlighting the urgent need for preventive healthcare, early screening, and public awareness programs.
The Cancer Programme (Cancer Awareness Programme)
Cancer remains one of the leading causes of death in Nigeria, accounting for an estimated 79,000 to 80,000 deaths annually, with women disproportionately affected. According to recent cancer statistics, breast cancer is the most common and deadliest cancer in Nigeria, contributing over 25% of all cancer cases and more than 20% of cancer-related deaths.
The most common cancers in Nigeria include breast cancer (25.3%), prostate cancer (14.1%), cervical cancer (10.7%), colorectal cancer (6.4%), and non-Hodgkin lymphoma (4.1%). Mortality rates remain alarmingly high due to late diagnosis, limited access to quality healthcare, inadequate screening programs, and poor awareness in many communities.
Breast cancer continues to be the leading cause of cancer deaths among Nigerian women, while prostate cancer remains one of the most diagnosed cancers among men. The rising burden of cancer in Nigeria highlights the urgent need for preventive healthcare, early detection, community awareness campaigns, and improved access to life-saving treatment services.
