Nasarawa Hepatitis B and C Outreach
Hepatitis B virus and Hepatitis C Virus (HBV and HCV) are severe liver infection with potentially fatal consequences. It ranks as the 10th leading cause of mortality globally and is closely linked to the development of liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma which could lead to liver failure. In Nigeria, according to statistics, Nasarawa State and Kaduna state have shown to have more cases of Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C.
Hepatitis B and C Screening and Vaccination
Hepatitis B virus and Hepatitis C Virus (HBV and HCV) are severe liver infection with potentially fatal consequences. It ranks as the 10th leading cause of mortality globally and is closely linked to the development of liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma which could lead to liver failure. In Nigeria, according to statistics, Nasarawa State and Kaduna state have shown to have more cases of Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C.
To this effect, Everight Healthcare foundation with approval from the Nasarawa state commissioner of health, set out to have an outreach which spanned 3 phases at two primary healthcare centers, namely Mararaba Primary Healthcare Center and Masaka Primary Healthcare Center all located in Nasarawa State.
Phase 1 included the screening of participants living in these axis for hepatitis B and C and we vaccinated those found negative for hepatitis B. This was done on the 28th at the Mararaba Healthcare Center and on the 30th at the Masaka Healthcare center.
Phase 2 included those who received the first vaccination only and were given the second dose of the vaccine on the and phase 3 will include those who were able to take the first and second vaccination only. This was to done in the months of September, October and November as this is the required standard.
Mararaba Analysis
The total number of people screened at Mararaba was 549 with 339 being females and 210 were males. Of the 549, 484 people were found negative and all took the first dose of the Hep B vaccine. The Second vaccination was done on the 26th of October and only 254 of them were vaccinated. The third vaccination was done on the 23rd of November and 209 were vaccinated. This means 209 started and completed the vaccine.
Masaka Analysis
At Masaka, 633 persons were screened for hepatitis B and C out of which 63 persons were identified positive to Hepatitis B, and 22 positive to Hepatitis C. A total of 534 persons were vaccinated on 1st dose for Hepatitis B, 365 persons were vaccinated for 2nd dose on 28th October and the 3rd doses were given to 293 persons during the last visit on 25th November 2024.
